Big Boy announced on or about Christmas that starting New Year's, he was going to be a vegan for three months. Now, some people are vegan or vegetarian for moral reasons, some for health reasons and some just to be rebellious but Big Boy decided that he just thought it would be something neat to try.
The first step was to explain to him that there are several types of vegan/vegetarians and he probably did not want to be a vegan. I explained that vegans didn't eat any animal by products so he would have to give up milk and eggs. My boy would give up soda before he would give up milk.
He decided that he would give up meat only and become a vegetarian. He then decided that maybe he would just give up mammals and fowl but continue to eat shrimp (not fish because he rarely eats fish now).
He is clearly not doing this for moral reasons as he fancies himself a hunter and is more than willing to personally kill what he intends to eat. He has not actually been out hunting yet but has eaten plenty of deer as it is often served at his best friend's house. And he is likely not in this for health reasons as if this were the case, it would =make far more sense for hi to give up chips and other snacks before giving up meat. No, he just thought it would be a neat thing to do. I tried to explain that vegetarians actually ate vegetables and this might be challenging since the only vegetables he likes to eat are corn and peas.
For New Year's Day (the day that this was supposed to start), my family hosts a huge breakfast for my brother and his family. We try to include vegetarian dishes for my brother since he is a semi-vegetarian (he usually avoids meat but is not adverse to eating some occasionally), so we included a spinach and mushroom quiche, pancakes and plenty of fresh fruit. Big Boy took one look at the offerings of bacon and sausage on the table and declared that he would be a vegetarian after breakfast.
Lunch at my mother's house included chicken, ham and chicken soup. Big Boy decided to start being a vegetarian after lunch.
By day two, it was decided that he would be a vegetarian from breakfast and school lunches but not dinner. By the end of the week, we never heard the word vegetarian again.
