The closest emergency room to our beach condo in Ocean City is exactly 20 minutes in the middle of the night. I should know, I have had two opportunities to time it. Ironically, this has become our new Christmas tradition. Every year, we set aside a weekend to go see Santa at his temporary workshop in Ocean City and visit the Winterfest of lights. Two years ago, on December 14, Big Boy tripped and fell against a metal bed pole, knocking his two front teeth out of whack. It took exactly 20 minutes to reach the ER.
Last light, after visiting Santa and going out to dinner, we settled in to bed. Big Boy had mentioned a couple of days ago that his stomach was bothering him - pain, not nausea. At dinner, he was playing in the acrcade and I pointed out to my husband that Big Boy was walking hunched over. When we asked him about it, he said his stomach / side hurt. By bedtime, he was complaining a lot. Big Boy never complains so we were worried. An Internet search revealed several possibilities but most were ruled out due to lack of fever or vomiting. We knew it wasn't his appendix because he had that removed when he was two. I had it down to gall bladder or ovarian cyst.
When the tears started rolling, I decided to take him to the hospital. Twenty minutes later, at 11:00 PM, there we were.
Big boy was terrified that he would get needle. It turns out that his fears had merit. He was "lucky" enough to inherit his Yia Yia's bad veins. After two unsuccessful attempts at inserting an IV, they called in the expert. Well, she didn't have much luck either. She got it on her second try but that was after several agonising minutes of moving the needle around. Big Boy did cry out and there were tears but he was incredibly strong and brave considering.
Once the IV was done, nerves settled a bit.
Once the painkiller kicked in, we were not only felling better but bored as well.
X-rays revealed no blockage, blood tests and urine also gave no clues. The doctor had no idea what was causing my little boy to be in pain and we were told to follow up with our pediatrician
By 2:00 AM we were back in the car headed back to the condo. I wished the staff a Merry Christmas, thanked them for taking care of us and said "see ya next year!"
